Common Causes Of House Fires

Originally posted on 05/30/2017

A home is on fire with extensive damage.Even though we don’t like to think about it, thousands of house fires happen each year. They are the major cause of fire deaths but are both survivable and preventable. For the sake of our precious possessions and our children, it is good to prepare against house fires and hope they don’t happen. Here are some of the most common causes of house fires.

1. Cooking

This is by far the main cause of house fires. It usually starts with a stove or oven that is left unwatched. Sometimes the fire could start from other kitchen equipment, catching fire and spreading it when they are kept too close to the stove. Always keep vigilance over stoves and ovens in use, clear the cooking area when the fire is on and have a fire extinguisher handy.

2. Heating

These are the second most common after cooking fires and cause a lot of death too. Fixed and portable heaters during the cold months are the main cause. Ensure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your heater and keep flammable materials away from it.

3. Smoking

When the light from a pipe or cigarette comes in contact with soft padded furniture, it can cause a fire easily. This is the highest cause of smoking fires and usually, happens when a smoker is careless or falls asleep with a cigarette in hand.

4. Electrical

Electrical fires caused by lights and those caused by electrical appliances are the most common. You can prevent this by staying within the voltage limit. Make sure not to place flammable materials over lamps too.

5. Candles

Thousands of fires are caused by candles due to carelessness each day. Flammable materials near the fire can start a fire. You should limit the size of the flame or use candles powered by batteries.
