Top 3 Things Mold Needs to Grow

The words black mold can strike terror into the hearts of homeowners. And while it’s not something you want to find in your walls, black mold — and every kind of mold — is no reason to evacuate your house and run for the hills. In fact, mold is fairly common, especially in damp, warm areas. It can be difficult to find behind walls and under flooring, but a little knowledge about mold's requirements can help you determine if your home is at risk and, if so, where the mold may be found.

Mold has three main requirements to survive. Interestingly, mold has roughly the same requirements to survival as humans. Let's look at each of them in some detail.

1. Water

Mold requires moisture to survive and spread. As you can imagine, this becomes a big problem in moist, coastal climates. However, even arid regions can harbor mold growth in key areas. Bathrooms are a particular problem spot. Leaky shower pans, faucets and pipes within the wall can drip, causing moisture to pool where it isn't easily found. The frequent use of warm water and high humidity makes bathrooms a veritable playground for mold.

2. Warmth

Just like us, mold thrives at room temperature. Mold multiplies and grows fastest between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. However, it can still survive in temperatures below freezing. Once again, tropical and coastal regions that combine high humidity and high temperatures are particularly at risk.

3. Food

What does mold eat? Just about anything. But mold especially loves porous, degradable surfaces. These include actual food items (mold loves bread!) but also frequently include wood surfaces like sub-flooring and wall paneling.

In short, mold likes pretty much everything you like. Food, water and shelter. But you'll want to address dripping pipes and leaky appliances if you don't want to deal with mold in your home.
