Chicago IL next in line for flooding disaster

Next in line for what seems to be a daily pattern across the Midwest is Chicago Illinois. The Chicago-Land area received upwards of six inches of rain early Saturday morning, creating widespread flash floods across northern Illinois. The severe storms follow shortly after the Milwaukee area received five inches of rain late Thursday evening. The month of July is proving to be amongst the wettest ever for many communities throughout the Midwest.

In what was described as torrential rain downpour, streets and expressways were forced to close down as they quickly flooded over. The flash floods can quickly cause streets and bridges to become unstable and there will definitely be a cautious approach following the large sinkhole that swallowed a SUV in the Milwaukee area on Friday. The U.S. has seen numerous flooding disasters in communities ranging from Boston to Nashville this year, and it appears that Chicago is the latest to get hit with severe weather. The city of Westchester was declared a state of emergency and their are likely to be many communties that could quickly follow suit with this decision to help bring in additional resources and financial assistance for disaster cleanup efforts

Flooded basements will likely be the number one issue facing property owners. The hard rainfall can quickly overwhelm a properties sump pump system and in many communities that lost power, sump pump systems are not working at all. Jarvis has deployed it’s National Disaster Response Team to the region to assist with cleanup and drying efforts following the storm damages. Jarvis teams will have water extraction trucks and specialized drying equipment to quickly work towards cleaning up water damage. Homeowners and property owners that need to schedule disaster relief services should call our 24 hour hot line at 866-452-7847

Flash flooding creates several disasters in Milwaukee Wisconsin

The State of Wisconsin is trying to dry out on Friday following a week of heavy rains that has led to flash floods throughout the area including hitting the Milwaukee area especially hard. A state of emergency has been declared in the Milwaukee county region as numerous sinkholes have formed due to the heavy rains, including one the swallowed a Cadillac Escalade and appeared to be over twenty feet deep.

The State has experienced record rainfall in the month of July, including another severe thunderstorm that hovered over the area for a long period late Thursday creating much of the flooding and water damage that is now present throughout much of the Metro area. Several schools were shown to be underwater and thousands of homeowners will now deal with cleaning up and drying out their basements over the next several days. Nicolet High School appears to be one the most hardest hit areas as the school was reportedly under two feet of water on late Thursday.

Jarvis Property Restoration has several disaster response teams that have deployed to the area to assist with flooding cleanup and water damage extraction efforts. There appears to be more rain showers hovering in the Dakotas that could hinder some of the dry out efforts over the next few days.

Disaster response teams prepare for Hurricane Bonnie in Florida

The potential for Hurricane Bonnie to reach Florida grew larger on Thursday as the tropical storm in the Atlantic appears to be growing larger. The storm system which is presently outside of the Bahamas appears to be growing in size and strength and carries the potential for wind gusts in excess of forty miles per hour. The origination of a storm from the Atlantic Ocean is more rare than typical hurricanes which originate out of the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical storm Bonnie is expected to reach Florida on Friday and then carry into the Gulf of Mexico early next week. The storm has already delayed some of the cleanup efforts following the BP oil spill as the Coast Guard and cleanup contractors are now taking defensive measures to try and protect the oil well in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm. Cleanup efforts have been underway for the last 90 days and there remains a great deal of uncertainty as to what the potential effects of a hurricane on cleanup and containment efforts. Should the winds carry the polluted water to shore beyond the beaches and coastline the damages could exponentially become more difficult to repair and the cleanup costs could soar.

Thunderstorms leave thousands in Michigan without power

Residents across Southeastern Michigan are cleaning up following a severe thunderstorm that hit the region on Wednesday evening. The heavy rains and strong winds caused property damage in Oakland and St. Clair Counties and knocked out power to almost 100,000 households in the State. According to reports from the national weather service, the severe storms carried wind gusts in excess of seventy miles per hour and some of the hardest hit communities were Lapeer, Troy and Ann Arbor.

A number of communities reported fires caused by downed power lines. In Berkley, their were reports of a large property fire as the electric lines hit a building and quickly created a large disaster. Many communities are likely to be without power through Saturday morning according to DTE which is responding to most of the power outages throughout the region. The good news is that the weather for the next forty eight hours is predicted to be storm free and mild, which should aid cleanup and repair efforts.

Residents in Ann Arbor are beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed from the severe weather as this is the third large storm that has hit the area in the past ninety days. Homeowners have faced numerous challenges from tornadoes and flash flooding this year, and have seen substantial water damages and wind damages from tornadoes.

Reconstruction efforts in Dundee and Newport have been underway for several weeks following the tornado damage caused by storms earlier this year. There were no reports of tornado sightings from yesterdays severe storms, but the seventy mile per hour winds still created substantial damage.
